The Egyptian Museum
The Egyptian Museum, founded in 1901 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II in the center of downtown Cairo, is one of the oldest archaeological museums in the Middle East. On two levels, the Museum houses numerous fascinating objects dating from the Predynastic Period to the Graeco-Roman Era (5500 BC – 364 AD).
It has a wonderful collection of Yuya and Thuya’s entire burials, Psusennes I’s riches from Tanis, and the famed Narmer Palette, commemorating the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one pharaoh. The famous sculptures of the great monarchs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the builders of the enormous pyramids on the Giza plateau, may be found in the museum. The Museum also has a large collection of sarcophagi, papyri, and jewelry, among other important artifacts that depict ancient Egypt’s glorious history and culture.
